Go Encounter 2023-2024

This trip to Chile was one of environmental appreciation, sharing love with those around us, and building relationships with our fellow travelers. We learned about the peace that comes from being in nature while also experiencing the gratification that comes as we looked out onto the Chilean landscape after a challenging hike.
Our hosts in Chile were so welcoming and willing to teach us about the language and culture. Staying on our host's property was an amazing opportunity as it allowed us to truly understand the day-to-day life of Chilean citizens.
This Chile trip was an amazing opportunity to learn about South American culture, practice our Spanish, and build relationships!

One thing that immediately stood out about the Navajo culture, and the culture of the school, was its welcoming nature. This week was an emotionally taxing time for most of the staff and students, yet that did not stop them from welcoming us, and sharing their hearts and caring for us. This was also true of the outside community. When we visited the flea market in downtown Gallup, we obviously stood out, as we looked very different from the majority of the population. However, every vendor we stopped at asked us questions about where we came from, and showed immense interest and care for our story and our trip!

You don’t need to communicate in the traditional sense in order to form a meaningful connection with a person. Virtually no one in Thailand, outside of our tour guides, spoke fluent English, yet we were able to truly connect with several people throughout our trip. For example, our hosts in Bangkok spoke very little English, but they were some of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever met. They were always so eager to serve our group in whatever way they could, from making coffee and breakfast each morning for us, to giving us a tour of the city they love so much our first night there, to going out and buying things our group needed and refusing payment in return.
